Montello Movement Committees Forming

Over 50 people gathered in early November to discuss what is great about Montello and areas that need to be addressed to take the city to the next level. Now committees are being formed to begin taking on some of the initiatives that came out of both the meeting and online surveys.

“What we are looking for now is people who have interests in certain areas or expertise to offer,” said Marquette County Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator Keri Solis. “It is going to take the community as a whole to move forward.”

Volunteers can participate at a level that works best for them. “Some may want to be actively involved in the planning process at a committee level, while others may be more hands-on when it is time to execute the plans created by a committee,” stated Solis. “There is also a plan in place to allow for communication between committees to keep consistency with projects and for everything to flow together.”

The following are areas where people may become involved:

Branding/Marketing/Community Art – Do you have an eye for design? Are you creative? Would you like to bring some unique and colorful initiatives to Montello? Then this just may be a fit for you!

Little Libraries/Little Food Pantries – Over the past year a couple “Free Little Libraries” have been placed in Montello and we are looking for more! We are looking for individuals or groups who would be interested in covering the cost of materials for each little library. In addition, we are looking for community members with the talent to build them!

Downtown beautification – We heard at the visioning session that the two things you would take people to see in Montello are the waterfalls and the downtown! We also heard that the community would like to work on some downtown beautification projects. Bring your ideas and talents to the committee with this effort!

Walkability and Trail Systems -  There are some great places to walk throughout the city, along with some amazing public spaces, but there aren’t a lot of good paths connecting each of the existing trails and gathering spots. If you have an interest in health, walking, and biking, this may be the committee for you!

In addition to these initiatives, Solis will be meeting with a city council committee in January to begin discussions regarding the need for new rental housing in the city and steps that will need to be taken by the city to attract a developer.

If you are interested in becoming involved in one of these initiatives, please contact Keri Solis at or 608-297-1000.
